Do you like snowmen?

 (Sergio Burani)

I love snowmen. They always smile! Making human-featured characters out of snow is said to date back to the Middle Ages, when in Europe townfolks would make them in the narrow streets of their small villages.

December: let’s start the month with Christmas angels

Christmas Angels (Sergio Burani)

I photographed these beautiful angels in a church in the Italian town of Merano, in Alto Adige. The peculiarity of this alpine region is that, while politically part of Italy, it is culturally Austrian. German is the official language and architecture shows the same kind of influence. These angels are a prime example.

Do you know where Mopti is?

Pinasse with passenger on the Niger River at sunset in Mopti, Mali (Sergio Burani)

Mopti is in Mali, West Africa, on the Niger River. It is here that one can catch a boat ride to Timbuktu, three days of navigation away by pinasse. I arrived in Mopti when the river was dry. Because of that, nobody would take me to Timbuktu. I decided to remain in Mopti and enjoy the sunset over the river water.

This woman was touching peppers at the market

Hands on Peppers (Sergio Burani)

I was traveling across the border between Burkina Faso and Mali. The last town on the road on the Burkina side is Ouahigouya. There was a lively market. This woman was shopping for fresh produce. Her hand looked beautiful on the peppers. Here is my photograph of that special moment.

The most beautiful green eyes I have ever seen

Indian girl with beautiful green eyes (Sergio Burani)

I was in Wagah, Punjab, India. That is the only place where one can cross the border on the road between India and Pakistan. I was a spectator to the world-renown ceremony for the lowering of the flag, taking place every day both on the Indian and on the Pakistani side.

A young girl was sitting near me. I was stunned by the beauty of her green eyes. I think they are the most beautiful green eyes I have ever seen in my life.
